A new Iowa tournament

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

Last weekend was the first Sioux City Regional Tournament in Iowa.  (They had been in Sheldon for years.)  We had a small contingent with only six students competing.  Everyone did their best and had a great time!  The students who judged on Saturday had fun and also hoped their efforts helped to encourage the students they judged to be even better students.

Breakin' boards and settin' goals

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

On Saturday is the latest in our series of free Goal Setting through Board Breaking seminars.  How can causing one piece of wood to become two with just body parts make you a better person?  You'll have to come to the session and find out!

By the way, how are those new year's goals coming along for you?  Remember, everyone gets discouraged, and everyone slips up at some time (or times).  How successful you'll be depends on what you do next:  Do you give up and think you just can't do it?  Or do you tell yourself that no one is perfect, understand that everyone makes mistakes, and step back back on the road to success?

Winter Camp has never been hotter

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

We're in the middle of our annual two-day Winter Camp.

Yesterday was "Forms Day."  Students got intensive instruction on the forms with which they are training: Songahm 3 for White, Orange, and Yellow belts;  In Wha 1 for Camouflage, Green, and Blue belts; In Wha 2 for Blue, Brown, and Red belts.  Black belts also received pointers and tips to sharpen up their forms.  Groups were created for skits, and in those groups, skits were created.

Today we are focusing on weapons.  At the end of the camp today, we will entertain ourselves with the completed skits and possibly congratulate some students who will have graduated to a new belt.  Everyone is having a great time and getting a good workout.

Literally, one Black Belt at a time

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

Tonight, during a very cozy Black Belt Testing, one of our students reached his goal to become a first-degree Black Belt.  We congratulate him on his achievement!

It's always a proud moment for us instructors to see one of our students perservere through the color belt grades to reach this level.  If you see him in the academy, be sure to congratulate him!  We're sure proud of him.

We will

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

Our students are making goals for themselves for the coming year.  We're asking each of our students to write down and bring to Mr. Raberge six goals for themselves, two of in each of the following categories:

  • Self
  • School or work (as appropriate)
  • Taekwondo

These goals should be measurable.  Instead of a vague goal of "Do better in math," one could set a goal of "Get an 'A' in math."  The goals should also be realistic, too:  If one is currently not exercising, a goal of one's winning an ultramarathon next year might not be a realistic.

Mr. Raberge will revisit these goals with the students in August.  By then, they will be able to say "Yes, I reached my goal!" or "I'm almost there!" or "I guess I need to step it up."

The new schedule starts today!

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

As mentioned at the Color Belt Graduation last week, the academy has a new class schedule.  The time you think your class is might not be what you think it is.  Please see the new schedule for your new class time, especially if you've graduated into a new color belt class (beginner -> intermediate, intermediate -> advanced).  If you'd like a slightly different format, see this schedule (with links to class descriptions) on the Student Resouces website.

Even if you're going to be in the same class, your form will change:

If your current belt is Your training form is
  Songahm 3
  In Wha 1
  In Wha 2

Congratuations, Color Belts!

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

Last night's color belt graduation was one of the biggest we've ever had!  More than 130 students moved up in grade to their next belt.  We're proud of all our Color Belts for their coming to class and working hard to not only become good taekwondo students, but to become better people as well.

At the graduation, Mr. Raberge talked about our new training system.  This is the first major change in a couple of years, and all the instructors are excited about it.  The major points can be found in our Student Resources pages along with an updated schedule and class descriptions.

The Student Section

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

As one moves through one's training in the art and practice of SongahmTM taekwondo, one often sees and hears things that are new about which one has questions. These inquiries range from "What did my instructor just say, and what does it mean?" to "I want to compete in a tournament. What do I need to know?" to "I'd like to practice my form at home. Do you have something I can use to remind myself of the moves?" and "What do those patches on my uniform mean?"

We have a place where we can answer most, if not all, of your questions.  Visit our Student Section.  This is a website specifically created to communicate to our students everything they would need to know to have a successful career in our academy.  Browse through it, and we'll bet you'll find at least three things you didn't know already.  If you still have questions about something or didn't find an answer to your question (or see a mistake), please ask Mr. Raberge or use the e-mail link at the bottom of each page.
