A testing time for our chief instructor

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

Our chief instructor and school owner, Mr. Kevin Raberge, will be taking his test to become a fifth-degree black belt.  He will test with his form, sparring, and board breaks.  He is excited to be so close to achieving this goal of his.  He will find out his results in a few weeks.

Our entire school sends him good luck and good skills!

Going to the next step...

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

Tonight we hold our summer color belt graduation ceremony.

In the category of "a nice problem to have," we have too many students moving to their next belt to hold it comfortably in our school, so we will be in a nearby middle school's gym.  About one hundred twenty students will end the evening little closer to their black belts.  Some have just started on their journey; some will be at their black belt goal by this time next year.

As with last time, we will have performance stations:  One for form, one for weapons, and one for board breaking and self-defense.  We are looking forward to all students showing us instructors what they've learned in the past three months.

Big Things in Little Rock

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

This week is the ATA World Expo in Little Rock, Arkansas.  This annual event combines a tournament of champions, business sessions, educational seminars, high-rank testing, an open tournament, and more pomp and circumstance than you can shake a bahng mahng ee at.

We'll have a relatively large contingent from our academy going to this event.  Among them, our chief instructor, Mr. Raberge, will test for his fifth-degree black belt.  He has been working toward this moment for more than four years.  There is no guarantee he will pass his test this week, but he will do his best, and he feels ready.

One of our students will be competing in the Tournament of Champions in traditional weapons and traditional sparring.  He earned this by his winning these events at the first-ever North District tournament in June.

Some of our other students will compete in the World Tournament.  This is like a regular tournament, but there will be many more competitors, and, as such, a win (or second or third) earns a compeitor many more points and is a great way to start off the tournament year.

And some of our students and families will be in Little Rock to watch their fellow students compete (and to see Mr. Raberge test) and to take in the experience and atmosphere of the ATA World Expo this week.

Happy Independence Day!

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

As our students already know, our academy is closed today.  We wish all of our students yearning to learn the ways of taekwondo a happy and safe Independence Day!

Regularly-scheduled classes will resume on Saturday, July 6.

New black belts tonight!

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

Tonight, our first degree recommended black belt (recommended) students will test to becom first degree (decided) black belts students!  They've been training hard during the past 2 to 3 years, and we're so very proud of how far their taekwond has come!  It seems just yesterday that they were white belt students.  (They grow up so fast, don't they?)

We'll also have some students taking midterm tests toward their second- and third-degree black belts.

Wish them luck either in person or via other means!

Our first district champions!

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

The inaugral ATA North District Tournament this weekend went well for some of our students.  The students earned seven district championships!  The competition was tough, and there were some surprises.  We congratulate them for their doing well through the tournament year and for becoming district champions!

The black belt district champions are now invited to participate in the ATA World Tournament of Champions in Little Rock, Arkansas, in early July.  There they will compete with other district champions and those who already were invited because of their being a top-ten points earner during the year.  It should be a very interesting tournament!

Next stop: Tournament of Champions!

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

The inaugral ATA North District Tournament will be held tomorrow at Lakeville North High School in Lakeville.  We will have a few of our students competing for a chances to represent themselves and their school at the ATA World Expo in July.

This tournament will feature the top 10 tournament point earners from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.  Other district tournaments will also be held this weekend, and a few more will be held next weekend.  The winner of each event will be invited to the Tournament of Champions, part of the ATA World Expo, in July, where they can vie for the title of world champion.

Doors for the district tournament open at 7:00 and will go through the early afternoon.  Come see the best taekwondo in this part of the country!

"Tournament Week"

ATA Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Lakeville

We've got a couple of taekwondo tournaments in the area this week.

Twin Cities Regional Tournament:  This is one of the four regional tournaments in our region, It's one of the last regional tournaments of the season, so many competitors in the region (and the country) are jockeying for pointsExcel Lifeforce Martial Arts in Woodbury is the host of the tournament, and the tournament will take place in Woodbury.  We'll have a decent number of students in the tournament this weekend.  A couple of our students will be taking a midterm test this morning, and our higher-ranked black belts will compete this afternoon. Tomorrow, all color belts, first-degree black belts, and younger higher-ranked black belts will compete.  Some go for the competition; some go for the judging; but everyone goes to see their friends, have fun, and do their best.

Raberge's Warrior Challenge:  Next Saturday, on April 27, our academy will host an in-school tournament. This is open to students at only our school.  We will have a few nervous people partaking in their first tournament, and we always applaud them for having the courage to put on the line and show off what they've learned.  We try to keep the mood very light and help the students have fun.  Some of our students who started in these in-school tournaments have become state champions and have been a part of the ATA Tournament of Champions.

So let's wish good luck to everyone who'll compete this weekend and next weekend!
